Highlands Christian School opened its doors in January 1999 as a ministry of Family
Worship Centre, today known as Highlands Assembly of God. The church had an existing
preschool, Family Worship Centre Playschool, which amalgamated with another private
preschool, Bright Buttons Preprimary School.

The name Highlands Christian School was chosen because the school looks out over the
Khomas Hochland (German for Highlands). In Israel places of learning are situated on the
high ground as a symbol of the elevated importance of learning. The outline of the Khomas
Hochland appears on the school’s letterhead.
The school’s badge carries symbolic representations of our Vision and Mission statement.
The badge is divided into 4 quarters by a cross, symbolizing that the Cross of Jesus and the
work of Salvation is central to our school’s existence. In each of the four quarters appears a
picture. The top left quarter has a picture of a dove, symbolic of peace. The top right quarter
has a picture of two hands clasped in greeting, symbolic of the meeting of people from all
walks of life. The bottom left quarter has, once again a picture of a cross, emphasizing the
message of Salvation which is the central purpose of our school’s existence. The bottom
right quarter has a picture of a tree, symbolic of growth, physically, academically and
spiritually.

The school started in 1999 with 3 preschool classes and 3 primary school classes. The
preschool classes catered for 5 and 6 year olds. The three primary school classes were made
up of a Grade 1 class, a combination Grade 2 & 3 class and a combination Grade 4 & 5 class.
Each class had one teacher. In 2001 a fourth preschool class was opened for the 4 year olds.
At that stage, the only combination class that remained was the Grade 6 & 7 class. All the
other grades were single classes.

By 2002 all classes were separate and a second Grade 1 class was opened, and hence the start
of introducing a second class to each grade. Currently the primary section of our school has
two classes each for Grades 1 – 7, except for one Grade 3 class. In late 2004 a decision was
made to open a Grade 8 class as the first phase of instituting a fully fledged secondary school.
It was also agreed in principle that the school would continue to grow into a fully fledged
High School.

When the school opened its doors, there were 60 children enrolled in the preschool and 40
learners in the primary school. Currently, the enrollment figures stand at 49 for the preschool
and 238 for the primary and high school, giving a total of 287 learners. Of the original
teachers who started the school in 1999, only Catherine Kawana still teaches at the Preschool and Virginia Basson has taken over the responsibility of school bursar.

When the school opened its doors, the Senior Pastor, Rev. Dwight McConnell, was also the
Principal of the school. He left in July 1999. The school operated without a principal until
April 2000 when Rev. Seth Husselmann was appointed as Senior Pastor of the church with
the added portfolio of principal of the school. He held this position until June 2005 when
Mrs. Diana Folsher, the Supervisor of the Primary Section of the school at the time, was
appointed as acting Principal. She served until the end of 2006 in this position. Mrs.
Marinda Henckert was then appointed as acting principal in 2007, a position that she held until end of 2008. The beginning of 2009 – 2011 Mr Chanville Mackrill as the new Principal. Mrs. Louise Boamah took over for a year and Mrs. Marinda Henckert continue as principal until she retired. Pastor Seth Husselmann took over from her for a year and Ms. Paulina Shimanya took over from him as from 2021 until date.
